The price at the gas pump is going up, along with food. This might have you looking to save at the store. And, one expert says you don't have to break the bank to fill your fridge with healthy food. You just have to follow three steps.

Peggy Martin says she's always looked for ways to cut costs while still eating well. Now, she offers advice as the coordinator of Iowa State University Extension's web site Spend Smart Eat Smart. She says, "It's healthy suggestions that cost less."

She says they launched the web site a couple years ago when families found it tough to make ends meet. She says, "Now, it looks like food is going up again and gas is going up again, so again people are going to have this crunch."

Martin says you can save money on healthy food by following three steps: plan, shop and eat. She says to take about an hour every week and take inventory of what's in your refrigerator and freezer. Then, look at the store ads from the paper or online. She says to stock up on discounted items you use regularly. And, make a meal plan based on the sales. Martin says, "And, you don't have to plan every little thing. You can just plan the main dish if you want to, or just the main two or three things."

Next, she says shop. She says to use your list. Look at unit prices for the best deal. And, avoid extra trips to the store. She says research shows you spend more money on impulse buys, and it wastes time. She says, "So, all those little trips to the grocery store in between those all take a half an hour, so use those half an hours to do a little bit of planning. It saves you money, saves you time and you'll eat better."

The last step is eat. Martin suggests you sit down as a family, so you can all enjoy the healthy meal that didn't cost a lot to make. The Spend Smart Eat Smart web site also provides healthy recipes. The meal options include nutritional information and how much it costs to make the meal.
